Screw plain-text emails πŸ€ͺ


Last week, an email subscriber sent me this question:


El Copy Goat... what happened to no pictures in emails like "sensei settle" teaches!?!?!?

Are you going against the plain-text email ways now too??????? I thought emails with pictures land in spam?

Pls help me understand whats going on!!!!

Haha, chill Obi.

Yes.

I did include a photo in one of my emails last week.

It was a screenshot of my book on Amazon under another book with the same title and design as mine.

(Some guy literally ripped off my book and ran ads towards his LOL)

But I added the photo to the email because in that case, it's way funnier to actually SEE the rip off rather than me just telling you about it.

And the truth is...

I'll likely be using photos in my emails even more often!

Not the way other people do it where they design their emails to look like a freaking mini-website.

I'm doing old school as if I was runnin' a blog in 2001.

Just slapping a square ugly picture to EMPHASIZE THE STORY.

As for landing in the spam folder...

Gmail and Yahoo are wayyyyy prioritizing two other metrics far more than media nowadays.

  1. Read time
  2. Replies

If people are staying locked into your emails and even better, replying to them...

You'll land in that persons primary inbox 10 out of 10 times even with 100 photos haha.

Primary inbox is not one size fits all.

Gmail caters your emails algorithmically!

​

Meaning if John Doe barely reads your stuff, your emails will land in his promotions.

But if Jane Doe gobbles up every word you say, you'll land in her primary.

Same email.

Two different inboxes.

Now to get even nerdier on this stuff...

(So I can help YOU land in the primary inbox!)

I have found the SWEET SPOT of media to be less than 40KB.

Basically, 1-2 small pictures max.

​

If you start doing colored backgrounds, HTML footers, nav menus, product inserts, photos, buttons, etc...

Yeah you're basically waving 2 big red flags:

  1. To gmail - I'm spam!
  2. To your readers - I'm a mass marketing email!
    ​

But don't copy me just cause I said it. I'm doing my thing. You do yours.

I'm just sharing what I am learning so that you can write emails that are UnCopyPastable!
