Ben Settle. Dan Kennedy. Daniel Throssell. If you were to ask me what Copywriters El Copy Goat studies the most. I would say those three names. If you were to ask me who I study outside of the copywriting world? I would tell you Jesus, John Mark Comer & Ryan Holiday. If you were to ask me who has personally influenced my life the most — at the top of the list would be a man named Lee Baker. You may not know him, but you’re about to. Here’s the story of the Legendary Rockstar you’ve never met...I met Lee thirteen years ago. I was mere little lad. Barely 20 years old. A beardless Alin at the time. (Just kidding… I was born with a BEARD… true story… when I was born my parents yelled at the doctors — “SOMEONE SHAVE THIS BABY!” — what a legend) Lee took the job as Worship Pastor at my church. And I was on the worship team playing guitar. That’s how we met. Not only did Lee and I play music together almost every single Sunday at church for over five years… We ended up working together at that church for another five years. Taking roadtrips to music conventions. Growing my first ever business selling guitar pedalboards. And aside from all that — he’s helped me navigate my relationship with God. My marriage. How to be a better dad. Influenced me to be a runner. Recommended books that changed my life. And helped me find my passion for writing. And anyone who knows me closely… knows I am who I am because of Lee Baker. Here’s what you don’t know about Lee…He blew up his entire life at 43 years old. (In the best way possible… that's coming...) When Lee came to work at my church, he’d already been in Ministry as a Worship Pastor since he was 19 years old. Then while we were working together at the church — Lee brutally hurt his hand. So much so, that I remember sitting in his office with him saying the words… “Bro I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to play guitar again…” Can you imagine doing ONE thing since you were 7 years old and not being able to ever do that one thing you love ever again? Especially when that ONE thing is your career? After he hurt his hand, I’d pop in his office with fresh pour over coffee while he did his recovery hand exercises. (Because coffee fixes everything!!! ☕ 😋)Well one of those random days, I sat down drinking coffee with him and he looked at me and said… ”I feel like God’s got something else for me, bro. And it’s not here.” He had no idea what his next was. But God did. Because over the next few months — his hand started healing and he started playing guitar again. So much so that he got invited to play guitar in this music video for an up and coming country artist named Max McNown. Well that music video over 1M views on YouTube.Which led to another music video that did over 17M views on YouTube. And that song won all kinds awards like #1 on TikTok’s Breakthrough USA chart and earning a Platinum certification. Which led to Max going on a WORLD FREAKING TOUR. And my good friend, Lee Baker, quitting his career at 43 years old to change his entire life and tour the world as a Rockstar. It’s kinda weird when I text him to see if wants to grab coffee and he says — ”Next Monday, bro! I’m in Norway right now.” Haha wild. But here’s the thing I don’t want you to miss… When Lee crushed his hand — he thought he’d never play guitar again. But it was the thing that slowed him down enough to start thinking about his life and what he wanted to do next. It gave him the space to breathe, ask God and be genuinely curious if this is still the life he’s supposed to live. It also gave him the appreciation that if he ever did heal his hand, he would never take for granted what it meant to do that one thing he loved most — play music. And when he was able to — he chased his ONE thing so ferociously that it opened doors he could have never imagined to a life better than he even dreamed for himself. Even though most people think 43 is too late — he just got started. And he’s dominating. This is for all of you who need to remember…*Bad things can become great things if you slow down enough to think about them *It’s never too late to chase the ONE thing you love *Do your ONE thing everyday This is why I write 1,000 words a day. Not because I have to. Cause I never want to imagine a day where I can’t. Speakin’ of 1,000 words — while Lee has been on tour, he wrote a book. (Planes, hotel rooms & bus rides give you a ton of writing time haha) He just dropped it a few days ago! Here’s the link if you wanna check it out. Hope this email inspired you today.
