Yesterday, I’m on the golf course with my good friend Robby and I realize… I SUCK AT GOLF! Haha! Well… I’m not as good as Robby… We got a 4:27PM tee time. I send him a quick text message: “Warming up at the range brochacho!” (Real text. I call my friends brochacho) Within a few minutes, Robby walks up to the range. “Let me warm up with you my man!” It’s 76 degrees. Beautiful. Sunny. A great day to shut off the world and hit balls in grazy green pastures for four hours. Robby sets up a ball. Walks up to it with a driver and… SLAM! “Oh my goodness bro I think that went 300 yards!!!” With his hand over his eyes to block the sun he replies… “Yeah bro, seems so.” SEEMS SO!? I COULDN’T HAVE HIT THAT SHOT HAD YOU OFFERED ME A FREE DINNER WITH GARY BENCIVENGA! Maybe it was a lucky hit… He walks up to the ball again… SLAM! 🏌️ “Broseph, did you juice up on roids before getting here!?” Haha he did it again! I thought maybe he was all power and no play but then… Once we got on the golf course, he was incredible! Every shot was dead straight. Irons. Chipping. Putting. Driving. Frankly, I regretted inviting him to come play 🤣 I felt like such a newbie! Which is hilarious because I’ve been practicing ALOT for the past two months. I even hired a personal golf coach to teach me. Even my wife is tired of me practicing my swing in the backyard! (Except she likes it when I play shirtless 😉) But it’s been a minute since I was a real beginner at something. And it reminded me of something called the Dunning-Kruger effect. Here’s what that is: A cognitive bias where individuals with low competence in a particular area tend to overestimate their abilities, while those with high competence may underestimate their abilities. After 2 months of golf, I really thought I was decent until I played with Robby… Who after 15 years, barely thinks he’s decent. Because the more you pursue mastery in a skill. The more you realize how much you don’t know. And this is exactly what happens in copywriting. You write copy for two months and think, “Oh wow I’m pretty awesome!” Then you keep writing for two years and realize...
“I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’M DOING!!” Haha we’ve all been there. But if you are a beginner in that early phase and want to “skip the line” a bit. I highly recommend checking out Write Publish Chill.
