I DISAGREE with Clayton Makepeace...


Yesterday, I was re-listening to an old interview with Clayton Makepeace from his incredible QuickStart Copywriting course.

(Which I don’t even think is available anymore and cost me a whopping $1,500 pre-inflation days…)

There’s this part of the interview where the guy asks him…

“Do you feel like you have to love the client to work with them?”

Clayton responds with…


You know, there has to be chemistry there.

He or she has to “get” me and I get “them.”

We have to both want to put together a winning package and that’s what matters.

But you don’t want to fall in love with your clients…

Because ultimately, what are we here for? To make money!

And I can tell you…

I’ve held on to clients who were making bad decisions for far too long because I cherished the relationship.

I’ll never do that again.

You want to be a mercenary. A hired gun.

You hire me to get the results and that’s what I am gonna do.

So relationship aside… our goal is a winning package.


The Copywriter in me is like…

But the 33-year old Entrepreneur with 15 years of business experience in me is like… ehhh.

I’ve noticed that the projects and people I’ve LOVED were by far the most successful.

I.e. when I’m in "mercenary mode" just trying to create a winning package but I have very little vested relationship in the whole thing…

I have little ENERGY for the project.

I have to drag myself to write it. To think about it. To build a funnel. To research it.

BUT ON THE FLIP SIDE…

Whenever you’re working your FRIENDS (people you actually care about) — you work harder!

You write better. You get jazzed and energized. You have a ton of fun doing it!

And dare I say you make more money because the product ends up better.

But the thing I hear all the time is…

“ALIN, I CAN’T BE PICKY WITH WHO I WORK WITH!”
