How to inject sales into a dying business


Here’s a story you may have never heard (but worth studying)…

When Gary Bencivenga (widely regarded as the greatest copywriter in the world) wrote Magalogs for Boardroom Inc…

He came across this random financial newsletter that no one knew about..

BUT…

It had an endorsement from Warren Buffet saying he loves this random newsletter.

When Gary saw that, he immediately went to his client (Boardroom) and begged them, “We should buy this publisher!”

Like, buy their whole company.

He didn’t care about the newsletter — he was trying to buy the celebrity endorsement.

He knew that one endorsement from Warren Buffet in the financial space could sell far more Boardroom newsletters than any crazy headline or copy would.

The same thing happened with LEGO.

In 1978, LEGO released their first Legoland Space Kit.

With rockets, planets and astronaut mini figures.

But it wasn’t until 1999 when they partnered with Lucas Film (owners of Star Wars) where LEGO's space style kits actually took off.

In fact, LEGO was on the brink of bankruptcy around the 1999 era.

Because video games kicked physical toys in the nutsack and demanded far more of kid's attention.

But with the celebrity partnership of Star Wars, it saved LEGO practically overnight.

It injected $800M into LEGO almost instantly equating for 1/6 of the total sales.

And to date...

LEGO has made $14B from just their partership with Star Wars.

LEGO is now the biggest toy company in the entire world.

And they may have never made it to 2026 if they hadn’t partnered with a celebrity brand like Star Wars.

Much like Swatch.

In 2020, Swatch was a dying brand — even though it was once one of the biggest iconic watch brands in the world.

But Apple Watch was kicking its ass and taking names.

For every 1 Swatch that sold… 12 Apple Watches were sold… 12 to 1!

Swatch had to pull a rabbit out of a hat or it’s gluteus assimis if it was gonna compete with Apple.

So what did they do?

They partnered with a celebrity brand that had celebrity names.

Omega.

In 2022, Swatch launches a collaboration with Omega called the Moonswatch.

Which is basically a cheap $50 swatch with the Omega name on it.

And it saved Swatch's business.

Over 260M units were sold within two weeks at an insane markup of $260 per watch (even though it literally is the same materials as the cheap Swatches!)

The Moonswatch sells for up to $1,000 on the aftermarket depending on the one you want.

Swatch is back on the map and is now competing with Apple at a 4:1 to Ratio.

This worked so incredibly well — Swatch partnered with yet another celebrity watch brand just last month.

AP (Audemars Piguet).

One of the most luxurious and prestigious watch brands in the world that carries celebrities like Kevin Hart, John Mayer, Jay Z, Travis Scott, Drake, Justin Bieber and a ho’ bunch more.

All this to say…

That partnering with a celebrity may be one of the most insanely profitable things you can do for your business.
