A brand spankin’ new Email Subscriber asks…


I’m confident that once I know my ideal customer profile I can produce copy that ignites them emotionally and gets them taking action. But knowing the most proven, reliable ways to find out WHO that ideal customer is… is my issue.

I’ve heard tons of ways: reddit forums, facebook comments and whatnot. Any special advice/experience come to mind? Any trick of the trade would be highly appreciated brother God bless you for your time with these replies!

I WANT YOU TO LOOK AT WHAT YOUR MARKET IS ALREADY BUYING! 🤑

I.e. your competitors.

What products are they selling? What ads are they running? What funnels are they driving traffic towards?

Be a secret shopper.

See what words they say… what promises they make… what bleeding neck problems they agitate…

There is NO REASON for you to re-invent the wheel, muchacho!

Next I want you to…

BE THE MARKET!

If you wanna write to golfers, go play golf.

If you want write to fiction novelists, start writing a fiction novel.

If you wanna write to gym bros, hit the gym bro!

You catchin’ my drift, son?

You need to FEEL the pain, agitation & obstacles that your people feel.

This was literally the advice Sensei Ben Settle gave me to me last year when I was writing copy for a golf client.

I reached out to Ben and asked if I could purchase his Golf swipe file.

He messaged me back and said — “I don’t have it organized enough to sell you but you’ll learn a hell of a lot more going out there and playing golf.”

SO I DID! ⛳

I bought some golf clubs the next day and started playing.

(But little did I know I’d get addicted to the game and spend every single dollar I made from writing for that Golf client just so I could play more golf!)

Dang it, Ben!!!!

Haha.

Either way, it made me 100x better at understanding the PROBLEMS, PAINS, DESIRES & OBSTACLES of the people I was selling.

Which leads me to this last point on Market Research.

HAVE BEERS WITH YOUR PEOPLE! 🍻

Kick back and hang out with them.

This is where you learn to TALK like your market…

And when you TALK like them, they TRUST you're one of them.

If you don’t talk like your market… they won’t believe a LICK of what you’re selling, son!

Back to my golf experience…

Golf has their own lingo (as do most niches).

You don’t wanna just hit the club…

You want to pure your irons.

You don’t want to look at how to putt the ball.

You want to read the greens.

You don’t want to get out of the sand.

You wanna get an easy up and down.

YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE?!

To non-golfers — those words make no sense.

But to golfers… it screams “ONE OF US! ONE OF US!”

This is more important in 2026 than it’s ever been!!!

Hark unto me, son, cause I’m tellin’ ya…

If you are not one with your market — you’re a FRAUD to them.

They have been swindled by fake gurus, mega companies and pyramid schemes far too much to give two rips about someone who doesn’t truly CARE.

Which reminds me of a short story from when Gary Halbert and John Carlton we’re writing together.

John finished a sales letter and passed it over to Gary to read.

Gary threw it on the floor and screamed at John — “Have some damn empathy!!!”

Meaning…

CARE!

If you don’t care about your people and product — why should they?

Anywho.

I’ve rattled on too much.

Not cause I’m super passionate about market research per say but because I’m really passionate about the MARKET.

Actually serving people.

Selling them something that solves a problem for them, makes their life easier.

As opposed to the more interested in ripping people off to fill up their pockets.

Not on my watch.
