Yesterday around 4PM, I pulled up to our Oceanside villa in Florida after driving for seven hours with three kids… Which you may be thinking… “I bet the kids drove you nuts!” WRONGO!My kids are saints. I’m the crazy one! 😜 My kids aren’t iPad kids either. I didn’t shove their faces in front of a screen and force them to watch Cocomelon like idiots. Do I look like an average normie who wants to rot the brains of my little ones? No way, muchacho! We ride ol’ school baby! I crank up some audiobooks (highly recommend Winnie the Pooh — hilarious for kids and great storytelling for adults). Or we bop our heads to nostalgic jams that Dad (AKA me) absolutely loves and doesn’t care what anyone else in the car thinks. My go to is Coldplay or John Mayer. My kids look at me funny when Dad is screaming… LIIIIIIIGHTS WILL GUIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE YOU HOME!Tears dripping down my eyes for no reason 😭 Imagine seven hours of this!? It’s my kids who are like, “Get us to the beach we need space from Eventually, they got their wish. We get to the villa we’re staying at for some vacay vibes the next few weeks and start doing the normal Day 1 Stuff: *Run to ALDI to load up the fridge *Unpack eight weeks worth of clothes we brought for two weeks *Order overpriced pizza to gobble down while watching golf highlights *Walk the beach for a stunning sunset *Destroy my 6-year-old in Super Smash Bros to keep him humble and remind him who run da streets After that charade of fantastic memories…… I walk over to the coffee table of our villa, whip out my bullet journal (how I track all my tasks, projects, etc) and start outlining my next day. Liam, my six year old, comes up to me and asks, “Dad are you working tomorrow?” “Yes buddy, I work everyday but Sunday.” “Are you working a lot tomorrow?” “No buddy, not a lot.” “Do you have to work everyday?” “Daddy has work that he loves to do.” “So you want to work everyday.” “Not always, but daddy is happy with his work.” “That’s nice. Can we play Super Smash again?” “Only if you want to lose son, only if you want to lose.” WHICH GOT ME MUSING… 🤔I’ve practically forgotten what normie job life looks like! Before this whole “working for myself writing emails in my underwear” thing — I used to have six weeks of paid vacation as the Vice President of a marketing agency. I could completely unplug, turn off my email, read books, work on nothing, disconnect from the world knowing that I would happily come back to 35 employees who have saved up all their demands for my return. And I gave that up to work 365 days a year… 🤪 Which sounds nutso? Maybe? I mean come on… Who wants to be at the beach writing emails and selling stuff to pay bills? That’s one way to look at it. But the way I like to look at it is… WHO WANTS TO SPEND THEIR ENTIRE LIFE SALIVATING FOR THE FEW WEEKS YOU CAN ESCAPE YOUR CURRENT LIFE?That to me is infinitely worse than… …sipping on a delicious latte from your villa balcony doing some writing while your kids nap. Or as one of my mentors likes to repeat: You choose your hard. It’s hard to work 365 days a year doing something you love. It’s hard to work 320 days a year at a job you hate. Which hard would you pick? For me, I’ve done both. And if you can’t tell… YOU’RE READING THIS EMAIL THAT I WROTE AT THE BEACH, NO!?Haha 🤣 I can go back to agency life anytime I want. But me no want. Instead, I wanna teach you how to build a one-person email based business that (yes, you run 365 days a year but…) you don’t have to escape from. Like the old quote goes: A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both. If thats the life you want to build and you need my personal help to do it.
